Limitations of Screen Printing:
  • Ribbed garments: 2x1 rib and baby rib fabrics are commonly used in many female and youth garments. These fabrics stretch when worn tightly. We can use a stretch additive so that the ink layer does not split under normal tension. We recommend that you consider water based printing  for your ribbed garments.
  • Seams and zippers: Plastisol ink builds up when you try to print it over a seam, hem or zipper. In these circumstances, consider water based printing for a smoother ink coating. Regardless of print method, there will always be some inconsistency of ink deposit when printing on an irregular surface.

About Screen Printing

Screen printing with plastisol ink is probably the most common way to decorate garments although water base printing is also extremely popular in today's market, and we are printing as much waterbased as plastisol these days... Plastisol is a plastic based ink that fuses with the fibers of a garment to create a print that will last the life of the garment. If you've ever had a shirt where the ink has broken up and fallen off after washing then it is a result an improperly cured ink.

Additives can be used to thin this ink down to a watery consistency in order to produce a soft print on your garments unlike the typical "rough and tough print" that you see coming out of many print shops. We can also use discharge inks when printing on darker colored garments to give you a very soft feel with vibrancy and color. Printing with dischrge ink has become very popular lately and many of the top clothing suppliers use the discharge method on their garments. We can print the plastisol ink thick also, but please discuss with us if you want a particular feel to the ink otherwise we will choose the print method that we think best suits your design.

Screen Printing on dark garments: What is a dark garment? Any garment that is dyed a color that overpowers the ink printed on it. This is every color except white, light grey and some pastel colors like light blue, yellow and wasabi.

Dark garments generally require a white layer of ink under all of the other colors so that those colors come out bright and opaque. If we do not first print an "underbase" your print with look a bit washed-out and you will be able to see the shirt color through it. This looks good for many prints but if you want solid bright colors then you will need to pay for an additional screen and print charge.

Printing on dark ring-spun cotton garments: Ring-spun cotton generally has more fibers on the surface of the shirt compared to a typical 100% cotton jersey material. Because of this, plastisol prints will tend to fibrillate (fibers of the shirt push through the ink layer) on this material. We will often print a discharge underbase on this material in order to give a softer less-fibrillated print that we think is more suitable for this fabric. We will choose to do this if we think it will be better for the appearance of your print. If you know that you want a 100% plastisol print then please request this from us, otherwise we will choose what we think is the best method to print your garment.
