Limitations of Screenprinting Foil:
- Foil has the shortest lifespan of any decoration that we may apply to a garment. It can tarnish after washing and may start to flake off after being washed repeatedly. Garments that are decorated with foil should be turned inside out for washing.
- We can apply foil with other colors of ink in the design, and we can print foil with up to 5 different ink colors as well. It is normally best to print the non foil colors with a waterbased ink or a discharge ink. This will limit any excess foil from sticking to other colors. You may get a little "scrap" foil that sticks to other areas that are not meant to be foiled, but you can easily brush this of or it will usually come off after the first wash.
- We only print one foil color per single print location. Multiple foil colors need to have adequate distance in between them to allow for proper production.
- Foil that is applied in large solid areas may show some small flakes where foil is missing. To minimize the apperance of this we normally print an ink color under the foil that is very similar to the foil color. When using foil we have found that it looks best when printed using a distressed look, or using the foil to highlight certain areas of the design. We have produced some amazing looking designs with foil, you just have to print it the proper way.
About Screenprinting Foil
Screenprinting with foil is a great way to add some really cool looks to your garments.
The first step in applying the foil is to print and adhesive or plastisol ink in the areas that you want to have foil. After that the gament is run through the dryer to cure the ink or adhesive. Finally we take a very thin metalic foil sheet and heat press it to the garment with a large heat press. This melts the adhesive or ink and the foil securely sticks.
Due to the fact that foil application requires the temporary melting of the ink or adhesive you may see some distortion in the original design. Although this is normally very minute, we don't recommend using foil for areas that are very detailed or have fine lines.
It is best to apply foil using a distressed pattern or to highlight certain areas in your design. When printing foil with a distressed look it is much easier to cover large areas without noticing any of the possible flaking.
Caring for garments printed with foil:
-
Never iron over areas that have been printed with foil.
-
It is best to wash foil garments on the delicate cycle. The best method for washing foil is by hand.
-
Turn the garment inside out before washing with a machine.
-
Hang the gament to dry, or select low heat when using a clothes dryer.
